Horizontal Container Loading System & Equipment

Load suitable dry bulk materials into 20ft and 40ft shipping containers while they remain horizontal. ZFITA designs telescopic conveyor-based loading arrangements that transfer material from the feeding point into the container through its rear doors.

From grain and industrial salt to selected mineral materials, our engineers help evaluate container dimensions, feed arrangements, conveyor reach and throughput for each application.

The Problem

Challenges in Horizontal Bulk Container Loading

A horizontal container-loading system must move material through a restricted rear opening, reach towards the far end and adapt to the material's flow and handling requirements.

01

Short Conveyor Reach

Conventional conveyors may discharge near the container door, requiring additional manual spreading or machine repositioning.

02

Unnecessary Handling Steps

Bagging or repeated loading transfers can add labor and handling operations when the material is suitable for direct bulk conveying.

03

Variable Materials & Loading Rates

Grain, salt and mineral powders have different bulk densities, flow behavior and dust characteristics; one nominal belt capacity cannot represent them all.

System Workflow

How the Horizontal Container Loading Process Works

The container stays horizontal—on a truck trailer or another suitable support. A telescopic conveyor delivers material through the rear doors, then adjusts its position as loading proceeds.

STEP 01Position Container

Align the container doors with the loading station and confirm safe clearance.

STEP 02Connect Feed Supply

Deliver material from an upstream hopper, bin or conveyor.

STEP 03Extend Conveyor

Move the discharge boom into the container to the designed reach.

STEP 04Load & Retract

Transfer bulk solids and reposition the discharge point as filling progresses.

STEP 05Complete Loading

Stop feeding, retract the conveyor, check load compliance and close the container.

Equipment & Integration

Key Components of a Container Loading System

Mobile Telescopic Belt Conveyor

The main loading equipment extends into the container and positions its discharge point as bulk material is transferred. Typical series options provided by ZFITA include 600, 800, 914 and 1,200 mm belt widths.

The published configurable range includes approximately 3–8 m retracted lengths and 12–28 m maximum extended lengths. Final dimensions depend on the selected model and are not a universal stroke for one machine.

01 / Feeding Equipment

Upstream hopper, storage outlet or conveyor delivers material at a controlled feed rate.

02 / Positioning & Clearance

Site layout, container door geometry and discharge height determine where the conveyor can operate.

03 / Dust & Safety Controls

Material-specific guarding, dust extraction interfaces and protective features can be evaluated during design.

Application Selection

Suitable Materials for Horizontal Container Loading

Grain

Wheat, Corn & Feed

Confirm product fragility, cleaning, belt contact surfaces and dust control.

Industrial Salt

Dry Bulk Salt

Review corrosion protection, moisture and material flow characteristics.

Minerals

Mineral Granules

Assess abrasive wear, density, particle size and load on the telescopic structure.

Fertilizer

Dry Fertilizer

Check caking, corrosiveness, moisture sensitivity and dust emissions.

Fine powders, hazardous dusts and high-density concentrates require application-specific engineering. An open belt conveyor is not automatically suitable for every product.

Horizontal Salt Loading — Cangzhou Salt Industry Group

ZFITA telescopic container loading conveyor in the Cangzhou Salt Industry Group salt loading project

Real project photograph: insert only an image verified to come from this project.

ZFITA documents a horizontal dry-bulk salt loading project for Cangzhou Salt Industry Group. The system uses a telescopic conveyor to feed salt through the rear doors while the shipping container remains horizontal on the truck trailer.

For this project, the solution focused on avoiding container tilting and reducing extra handling steps. It illustrates the feasibility of telescopic horizontal loading for a suitable dry bulk material, rather than a universal loading-rate guarantee.

Choosing a Method

Horizontal vs. Vertical Container Loading

Choose the loading method based on the material, container handling arrangement and site conditions—not simply on the theoretical conveyor capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Horizontal Container Loading FAQs

Can this system load both 20ft and 40ft containers?

ZFITA offers telescopic conveyor configurations intended for 20GP, 40GP and 40HQ containers. Specific reach, entrance clearance and load distribution must be evaluated for the chosen model and site.

Does the container need to be lifted or tilted?

Not for the telescopic conveyor method shown here. The container remains horizontal on a suitable trailer or support, while material is fed through the open rear doors.

Can it load grain and mineral powders at the same tonnage per hour?

No. Required conveyor design and allowable mass throughput depend on material bulk density, flow, belt loading, motor power and the telescopic boom's structural capacity.

How far does the conveyor extend inside the container?

ZFITA's published configurable series includes maximum extended conveyor lengths from 12 to 28 m, but actual insertion reach depends on equipment placement, the selected design and container geometry. Total extended length must not be confused with net telescoping stroke.

Can the same solution load open-top trucks?

Potentially, with an appropriate discharge-height range and site layout. Truck compatibility must be checked against the actual boom lift range and vehicle sidewall height.

What equipment feeds the telescopic conveyor?

Depending on the project, upstream feeding may come from a hopper, silo outlet or another conveyor. The feeding arrangement should be designed to maintain a controlled and continuous flow.
