Using a Container Tilter to Unload the Container
Unloading a shipping container does not always require a crane.
For bulk materials such as fertilizer, salt, coal, grain, minerals, plastic resin and other dry bulk products, there are alternative unloading methods that can handle the container or the truck-and-container combination hydraulically.
ZFITA provides two practical solutions for unloading containers without a crane:
- Hydraulic Container Tilter – tilts the container directly for unloading.
- Truck Dumper – tilts the truck and container together, allowing the bulk material to discharge directly from the container.
The right solution depends mainly on how the container is transported, the available site layout, and whether the container needs to be separated from the truck before unloading.
1. Using a Container Tilter to Unload the Container

A container tilter is one of the most direct ways to unload bulk material from a shipping container without using a crane.
Instead of lifting the container with a crane, the hydraulic tilter mechanically secures and tilts the container to create the required discharge angle. Once the container reaches the unloading position, gravity causes the bulk material to flow out through the container doors.
This method is particularly suitable when the container can be separated from the truck and positioned on the container tilter.
ZFITA container tilters can be designed for standard 20 ft and 40 ft ISO containers, with different configurations available depending on the application.
Typical features can include:
- Heavy-duty hydraulic tilting system
- Hydraulic locking and securing system
- Manual, semi-automatic or automatic operation
- Remote control operation
- Weighing system integration
- Centralized lubrication
- Customized unloading angles and configurations
- Adaptation to different site layouts and material characteristics
For materials with good flowability, gravity discharge may be sufficient. For materials that tend to bridge, stick or remain inside the container, additional vibration can be integrated into the unloading system.
For example, fertilizer and other bulk materials may not completely discharge through gravity alone. A hydraulic container tilter combined with a vibration system can help improve material flow and reduce residual material inside the container.
When is a container tilter a good choice?
A container tilter is particularly suitable when:
- The container needs to be unloaded separately from the truck.
- A reach stacker, forklift or other container-handling equipment is available.
- The customer wants a dedicated container unloading station.
- The site requires controlled hydraulic tilting.
- Different containers need to be unloaded at the same location.
In this configuration, the tilter operates the container itself, rather than tipping the entire truck.
2. Using a Truck Dumper to Tilt the Truck and Container Together

There is another option when the customer does not want to separate the container from the truck.
A truck dumper can lift and tilt the entire truck together with the loaded container.
Instead of removing the container from the chassis and placing it onto a separate container tilter, the truck drives onto the dumper platform. The hydraulic system then raises the platform and tilts the truck and container as one unit.
As the container reaches the required dumping angle, the bulk material flows directly out of the container.
This approach can simplify the unloading process because the container remains on the truck throughout the operation.
ZFITA truck dumping systems can be engineered for heavy-duty bulk material applications, with configurations available for different truck sizes, container arrangements, capacities and site conditions.
Typical applications include unloading:
- Coal
- Grain
- Fertilizer
- Salt
- Minerals
- Biomass
- Agricultural products
- Other dry bulk materials
A truck dumper can be particularly useful when containers arrive at the unloading facility already mounted on trucks and the customer wants to minimize container handling.
Container Tilter vs. Truck Dumper
Both systems can unload a container without using a crane, but they handle the container differently.
| Feature | Container Tilter | Truck Dumper |
|---|---|---|
| What is tilted? | Container only | Truck + container |
| Container separated from truck? | Generally yes | No |
| Main operation | Tilts the container directly | Tilts the entire truck and container |
| Container handling equipment | May be required | Less container handling during unloading |
| Typical application | Dedicated container unloading station | Truck-mounted container unloading |
| Hydraulic operation | Yes | Yes |
| Suitable for bulk materials | Yes | Yes |
| Conveyor integration | Available | Available |
The choice therefore depends less on which machine is “better” and more on how the container arrives at the unloading site and how the material needs to be handled afterward.
3. What If the Material Needs to Be Conveyed After Unloading?

Unloading the container is only the first step in many bulk material handling projects.
After the material leaves the container, it may need to be:
- Transferred to a storage area
- Stockpiled
- Fed into a hopper
- Transported to another production process
- Loaded onto another truck
- Loaded onto a vessel
- Transferred between different processing or storage areas
This is where conveyor system integration becomes important.
ZFITA’s strength is not limited to supplying a container tilter or truck dumper as an individual machine. We can engineer the complete unloading and conveying system, including the equipment required after the container is unloaded.
For bulk materials with a lump size below 300 mm, ZFITA can design and supply suitable conveyor systems according to the material characteristics, required capacity and conveying distance.
Depending on the application, the system can include:
- Belt conveyors
- Mobile conveyors
- Telescopic conveyors
- Inclined conveyors
- Chevron belt conveyors
- High-sidewall conveyors
- Transfer points and hoppers
- Feeding and discharge systems
- Stockpiling conveyors
- Conveyor systems for subsequent ship or truck loading
The conveyor configuration can be designed around either a container tilter or a truck dumper.
For example:
Container → Container Tilter → Hopper → Belt Conveyor → Stockpile
or:
Truck + Container → Truck Dumper → Hopper → Belt Conveyor → Ship Loading System
This allows the unloading equipment and downstream material handling system to be engineered as one complete solution.
4. Container Tilter or Truck Dumper: Which Configuration Fits Your Site?
If your container can be removed from the truck and you want a dedicated container unloading station, a container tilter may be the appropriate configuration.
If the container normally arrives on a truck and you want to unload the material without removing the container from the chassis, a truck dumper provides another practical option.
And if the material must be transported, stockpiled or loaded onto another transportation system after unloading, the unloading equipment can be combined with a custom-designed conveyor system.
This integrated approach can reduce the need for separate equipment suppliers and simplify the engineering of the complete material flow.
5. A Complete Bulk Material Handling Solution from ZFITA
ZFITA specializes in engineering bulk material handling solutions, rather than simply supplying individual machines.
For container unloading applications, we can provide different configurations based on the customer’s actual operating conditions:
Container Tilter
→ Directly tilts the container for controlled unloading.
Truck Dumper
→ Tilts the truck and container together for direct unloading without separating the container.
Conveyor System
→ Transfers, conveys, stockpiles or feeds the discharged material to the next process.
This combination allows ZFITA to provide a more complete solution from container unloading to downstream material handling.
If you are looking for a way to unload bulk material from containers without using a crane, tell us how your containers arrive, what material you are handling, the approximate lump size, required capacity and what needs to happen after unloading.
ZFITA can evaluate the application and develop a suitable container tilter, truck dumper or integrated unloading and conveyor system for your project.
