The buyer's problem

What Problems Does Bulk Container Unloading Equipment Solve?

Container unloading is not just tipping a box. The equipment must safely position a loaded container, discharge its contents into a receiving system and transfer material to the next process.

Slow Manual Unloading

Manual removal of loose bulk materials can require significant labor and create inconsistent handling times. Hydraulic unloading reduces the need for people to work inside a container.

Uncontrolled Material Discharge

Without a properly sized hopper, bulk material may spill or overload downstream equipment. Receiving capacity and flow control must be designed together.

Flow Problems & Residue

Moist, cohesive or irregular material may bridge or remain inside a container. Tilting angle alone does not guarantee complete discharge.

Dust and Spillage

Dry powders and granules may generate dust during transfer. Hopper geometry and dust-control connections can be considered for suitable projects.

Different Container Sizes

20ft, 40ft and convertible configurations have different support lengths and maximum angles. Match the equipment to actual containers and gross weight.

Limited Site Space

Truck circulation, receiving equipment placement, foundations and safe clearance affect whether a stationary, mobile or lift-positioned tilter is suitable.

System configuration

How a Container Unloading System Works

A typical gravity-assisted system combines the container tilter with a receiving hopper and a conveyor or process line. The following is a conceptual flow, not a universal machine operating procedure.

Loaded Container20ft / 40ft ISO
Hydraulic TilterPosition + Secure + Tilt
Receiving HopperCapture bulk discharge
Transfer ConveyorControl onward flow
Silo / Process LineStorage or production
01

Position the Loaded Container

Deliver the container by truck or compatible external lifting equipment, depending on the tilter model. Check weight and site readiness.

02

Secure the Container

Engage the specified locking arrangement and verify safety conditions before tilting. Door and discharge controls must suit the cargo and machine design.

03

Tilt to the Required Angle

Raise the container under hydraulic control. Select an angle compatible with the equipment specification and material flow characteristics.

04

Discharge into the Hopper

Allow material to exit through the designated opening into a suitable receiving hopper, while coordinating the downstream conveying rate.

05

Manage Remaining Material

Check for bridging or residual cargo. Any assisted discharge must follow an engineered procedure and site safety controls.

06

Lower, Unlock and Remove

Return the container to its designated position, complete the safe unlocking sequence and clear the station for the next container.

The equipment

What Equipment Is Needed for Bulk Container Unloading?

Core equipment

Hydraulic Container Tilter

Supports and tilts a secured shipping container to help gravity discharge compatible bulk materials. Selection depends on container size, operating load, positioning method and required angle.

VIEW CONTAINER TILTER RANGE →
Receiving system

Bulk Material Receiving Hopper

Captures discharged material and interfaces with the next handling stage. Hopper shape, volume, wear protection and dust management depend on the material and target throughput.

Downstream transfer

Belt / Screw / Other Conveyor

Moves material from the hopper to storage or a production line. Type, capacity and sealing must be selected for particle characteristics and transfer distance.

Optional integration

Controls, Weighing and Dust Management

Depending on project requirements, system design may include load monitoring, flow control, interlocks, guards and dust extraction connections. Weighing is not standard on every model.

Container size

20ft vs. 40ft Container Unloading Equipment

Different models provide different tilting ranges. A 40ft container tilter with a 45° maximum angle must not be promoted as a 90° unloader.

Which Container Tilter Configuration Should You Choose?

01 / STANDARD

Standard Hydraulic Container Tilter

For a dedicated unloading station using truck-coordinated positioning. Select 20ft, 40ft or convertible configurations by size, weight and required discharge angle.

Unloading Different Bulk Materials

Dry bulk cargo does not all behave the same way. Its discharge characteristics influence hopper selection, tilt requirements, dust management and downstream conveying.

Grain & Agricultural Bulk

Check flowability, moisture, dust generation, contamination control and receiving conveyor capacity.

Fertilizer Granules

Review bulk density, product degradation, moisture sensitivity and corrosion protection.

Minerals & Ore Granules

Consider abrasion, weight distribution, lump size, chute impact and wear lining.

Plastic Resin Pellets

Consider contamination prevention, controlled discharge, static or dust risks and suitable conveying systems.

Compatible Dry Chemicals

Evaluate hazardous-area classification, material compatibility, dust controls and applicable safety obligations.

Recyclable Bulk Materials

Assess irregular particle shape, bridging, impact loads and whether gravity discharge is technically suitable.

How to Specify a Reliable Container Unloading System

Before choosing unloading equipment, confirm the cargo's behavior and the entire handling route—not just the hydraulic tilter's rated capacity.

  • Container size and maximum gross weight
  • Material name, bulk density and moisture content
  • Particle size, flowability and tendency to bridge
  • Required unloading throughput (tonnes/hour)
  • Hopper receiving volume and conveyor capacity
  • Available tilting angle and discharge-opening arrangement
  • Truck approach, lifting method and space constraints
  • Electrical power, ground conditions and dust-control requirements

Frequently asked questions

Bulk Container Unloading FAQ

What is bulk container unloading equipment?

It is equipment used to remove bulk material from a shipping container. Depending on the process, a hydraulic container tilter may work with receiving hoppers, conveyors and controls to form a complete unloading system.

Can one container tilter be used for loading and unloading?

Yes, when the selected model supports both operations and suitable feeding or receiving equipment is provided. The operation is determined by material direction, not simply by the tilting angle.

Does container unloading require a 90° tilt?

No. The necessary angle depends on cargo flowability and discharge conditions. The listed ZCT-ATT40 is limited to 0–45°, so it must be evaluated against the actual unloading task.

What is the difference between container unloading and truck unloading?

Container unloading removes cargo from an ISO shipping container. Truck unloading typically discharges cargo from a truck or trailer body. They use different securing, positioning and discharge arrangements.

Can ZFITA supply a mobile container unloading configuration?

ZFITA offers self-propelled container tilter configurations. Available 20ft and project-specific 40ft options must be confirmed with model-specific travel and tilting specifications.

What should I know about hopper and conveyor capacity?

The hopper must receive the expected discharge safely, and the conveyor must move material onward without backing up. Both must be evaluated together with the intended flow rate and material properties.

Can these machines unload wet or cohesive materials?

Possibly, but suitability is not guaranteed. Moisture, bridging and material adhesion may require an alternative discharge opening, flow-assist equipment or a different handling method.

Is a weighing system included as standard?

No. Weighing is an optional subsystem on applicable configurations. Its specification and scope must be confirmed in the quotation.
